If you’re a music fan, a garden recording studio is a great idea. You can play, mix and create music in your very own space to your heart’s content. To make the most of your garden music studio, you may want to consider sound proofing so that you can play your music as loud as you like. Read on for our step by step guide to soundproofing your garden music room.

Step 1 – Insulate your garden recording studio

If your garden room has a very basic timber structure, you will need to firstly add insulation to the hollow frames to give better results with soundproofing. A high quality mineral wool will give good thermal as well as acoustic insulation. You will also need to clad the inside of your garden room with plasterboard to increase the mass.

If you buy a well-built garden room with ready-made insulation, then you won’t need to worry about the hassle of this step at all. At Surrey Hills, our range of garden rooms is crafted from high quality western red cedar, which is naturally insulating. So no need for any added insulation.

Step 2 – Create a room within your garden music room

In order to absorb the energy and vibration that emanates when a high volume of sound is created, it needs to be blocked in every direction of your garden recording studio. That means walls, ceiling and floor.

By building stud frames in front of each inner wall, you can achieve a sound-proofed room within your garden music room. Each wall should have a minimum of 10mm between the frame and the outer garden room wall. The bigger the gap, the better the sound proofing.

The hollow created between the stud wall and the outer wall needs to be filled with insulation using a special acoustic mineral wool.

Do the same for the ceiling and the floor, by building a frame which can be attached both above and below, making sure you use acoustic wool to insulate.

Step 3 – Add resilience to your garden music studio

For the ultimate soundproof garden room, add a resilient system to your stud frame wall from which you can hang your dense material (see the next step).

Resilient bars and systems allow the heavy material to flexibly move and absorb the vibration of sound.

Step 4 – Add mass to the garden recording studio

Adding heavy, dense material helps to block airborne sound waves in your garden recording studio. Using a range of different materials helps to block a wider range of sound frequencies.

Try using a special acoustic plaster board with a high density membrane such as TecSound SY100 to layer onto your internal walls.

Step 5 – Windows and doors for your garden music room

When soundproofing your garden recording studio, you will need to think about the windows and doors. These are often the weakest points.

Heavy solid wood doors work best, as the density helps block the sound waves. Ideally, you should have two doors; one on the original wall of your garden music studio, and another installed on the new stud frame. The doors should be airtight with a good seal.

For windows, an acoustic glass is best for soundproofing and helps to maximise heat efficiency and security. Using a secondary system – with a window on the external wall of your garden music room and another on the internal stud frame – gives you the best possible soundproof garden room.
